HMRC has launched a new, free, mobile app, available on Apple and Android devices, that gives you access to HMRC’s information on your personal tax affairs, providing you with a quick and easy way to check your tax and benefits on your smartphone or tablet.

You can use the app to view your tax code, National Insurance number and Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) for Self-Assessment, along with an estimate of the tax you need to pay. The app also gives details of your income and benefits, how much you’ll receive in tax credits and when they will be paid.

Offering help and support on a number of issues, the HMRC app enables you to track forms and letters you’ve sent, claim a refund if you’ve paid too much tax and update your postal address.

In addition, there’s a tax calculator that enables you to work out your take-home pay after Income Tax and National Insurance deductions, you can report tax credits changes and complete renewal, and access your Help to Save account.

To get started, you can download the free HMRC app from the App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android. Simply follow the on-screen instructions to complete your app settings and you’ll be asked to sign in.

When signing in for the first time, you’ll need to enter your Government Gateway user ID and password. Thereafter, you can sign in using either a 6-digit PIN, your fingerprint or facial recognition.

This is the only app that gives you access to HMRC’s information on your personal taxation affairs, giving you control over your financial life, and it is estimated around 550,000 people are now using it each month. It’s also an extremely useful tool for financial planners, too, giving such information as state pension forecast and private pension tracing.

HMRC takes cyber security very seriously and keeps you safe online with a number of measures, including secure sign-in, automatic logging out if you forget, firewall protection, security certificates and details of your last login date and time. All in all, the new HRMC app looks safe, easy to use and hugely beneficial, so may well be worth downloading!
